8 Ways to Cultivate Better Work Relationships in 2018

8 Ways to Cultivate Better Work Relationships in 20188 Ways to Cultivate Better Work Relationships in 2018 The office used to be a place where you would come, put in your eight hours, and go home to those who loved you. Work wasnt a place where you expected friendships or significant connections. However, things have changed. There has been a shift within the workforce towards wanting meaningful work, insists career coach Jenn DeWall . Meaningful work can encompass a variety of things from having a job youre passionate about to working on a strong team and knowing your a valued member. And at the core of that meaningful work is the people you work with. We spend more times at our jobs than we do with our family and friends. Given the amount of time we invest in a company, people want to see a greater return on their time investment. Cultivating better work relationships has also become an essential factor in career growth and promotion . DeWall explains that beca use career advancement comes from networking, the quality of relationships at work can vastly impact your chances for climbing the ladder. If we dont have positive work relationships its harder to build a professional network of resources and advocates that know your value and want you to succeed, says DeWall. Think of your positive work relationships as cheerleaders. The more cheerleaders you have the more people will recognize you for promotions or career opportunities. Now that we know why professional relationships are worth the investment, DeWall offers her insights into how to cultivate and nurture bonds with colleagues. And were not just talking about happy hours. Whether youre new to the team or a seasoned manager, heres how to get beyond the cocktails and casual conversation to really form lasting professional bonds thatll benefit your career. If youre just joining a company, DeWall suggests an informal meet-n-greet. Set up an informal getting to know you meeting. Get t o know them. Ask them about their experience at the company, their expertise and also ask them if they would be okay with you coming to them for questions because you are new.No one wants to work with a know-it-all or someone that thinks they dont need help, says DeWall. If you act this way you will likely reduce the number of people that want to work with you. Its important to let them know that you are here to learn from their expertise and to do your best for the team. Always thank individuals that assist with your training and development, especially in the beginning as this increases your probability to have positive working relationships.Take time to understand the culture and norms before inserting your commentary. Make sure that you are showing respect for the companys decisions and how they got to where they are today. This respect and curiosity will develop into stronger working relationships. If youve been in the work world for a while, youve had your share of good and bad on-the-job relationships, DeWall says that you may need to repair some fractured ties. Her best advice? Acknowledge the challenge or issue that caused the strain and take responsibility. Do not deflect or play the blame game. Own your share of what made the relationship bad. Schedule a private meeting with the individual to have a conversation and apologize. It is never too late to apologize, ever. For managers looking to improve their company culture or team dynamic, take small steps towards change and dont set the bar too high for direct reports. DeWall says, Make sure your team understands what you expect of them. The more they have clarity the more confidence they will have in their ability to do what is asked. If you have ambiguous expectations of your team expect that it will be matched with frustration towards you as youre not giving them clear direction to support their success.Give praise and recognition at least every 2 weeks, DeWall advises senior leaders. People want to be seen at work, they want to know that they matter. Praise and recognition are the ways to ensure employees feel their value. The more they know their value, the harder they will work.If strengthening professional bonds is on your 2018 list of resolutions , its important to remember that no matter what title a coworker may have, they are just as human as you are. Connect as you would with anyone else. Get to know their interests, dreams, personal lives, hobbies etc. Get to know them . The more you get to know them the more your relationship will grow and strengthen. In this day and age, it can be intimidating or even nervewracking to try to bond with coworkers. Afterall, knowing what is appropriate according to each colleague, or how actions will be interpreted, can be tricky. However, DeWall says that erring on the side of professional courtesy is the best policy. As a general rule practice care and respect for people and see them as individuals, not coworkers. Understand that we have all different backgrounds and experiences which lead us to who we are. Be respectful of those differences, she says. Also, in the age of MeToo, its important for individuals to act with integrity and call out behavior that is inconsistent with it.

Hows Your Job Search Karma Right Now

Hows Your Job Search Karma Right NowHows Your Job Search Karma Right Now2Karma. The Boomerang Effect. Action and consequence. Call it what you will, but the possibility that the energy you send out into the universe, good or bad, may bounce back to you in unexpected ways is a powerful idea to ponder. When it comes to your career- your job search karma- where do you stand right now?Consider this cautionary tale from London, recounted on Twitter by a job recruiter whose run-in with a potty-mouthed fellow subway commuter might give us all pause for thought. Turns out, an obscene and seemingly random remark on Londons Tube during the morning rush hour came back to bite the commenter. Oblivious to the consequences, he dropped the F-bomb when pushing past someone on his way to a job interview. That faceless someone was, in fact, the person who would be interviewing him later for the job. Oops. Talk about negative job search karma (The upshot Mr. F-word didnt get the job.)Heres a possible ta ke-away be courteous and kind, in your job hunt and in your day-to-day life, because- who knows?- you may be sending out job search karma that will come back your way. Think thats a far-fetched idea? The responses to the recruiters Tweet, detailing similar scenarios, seem to indicate otherwise. Here are reasons why job search karma may be importantWhat Goes AroundIn effect, the saying what goes around, comes around is the Cliffs Notes version of what karmas all about. Random abrollcontainer-transportsystem of rudeness, or of kindness, might just matter. So be kind- not that you need a reason to do so. However, just in case you do, Twitter responses to the British job recruiters experience show that other people have had like encounters. Do your due diligence before an interview, know who youll be dealing with, and take nothing for granted. The People You Meet on Your Way UpImagine a road rage incident with a prospective job applicant or swooping in to steal the parking space of your po tential future boss. The responses on Twitter detailed those encounters, offering proof that bad job search karma isnt a rarity. If youre headed into an interview, having a quiet mind to prepare yourself and gathering your thoughts beforehand may forestall moments of haste, rudeness, or bad behavior that you might regret later.Mind Your MannersYour mother may have said it best mind your Ps and Qs. Obviously, your behavior before, during, and after a job interview can make a huge difference in whether you get the job. Never mind whether or not you might have a chance encounter with your interviewer beforehand. Rushing forward full-force and setting your manners aside can have unexpected consequences- and not in a good way.Readers, do you believe in job search karma? Happiness 3 tips for finding a job that you love

Happiness 3 tips for finding a job that you loveHappiness 3 tips for finding a job that you loveSome might call me lucky I absolutely lovemy job.I didnt always. In my previous role as an employee at abedrngnisher company, I felt that I wasnt able to speak up at work. Now, Im the CEO of a company that helps people communicate more openly and honestly with their coworkers. Its my dream job.People will sometimes ask me Howd you do it, Claire? Howd you find happiness at work? Its a tricky question to answer because happiness is individual for every person - what makes me happy might not make you happy. But for me,happiness at work meansa deeper, longer-lasting sense of purposethat doesnt fade. Its not a paycheck bonus or a fancy office - its meaning in the work Im doing, in the people Im helping, and in the impact Im creating. Here are three realizationsthat helped me findhappiness at work.Be honest about what you wantIn my senior year of college, I decided to start a company with a few fri ends. I was still in school taking classes to graduate, I was student body president, and I was interning at a VC firm downtown - all while trying to start this company. In other words, I was completely in over my head and over-committed. When I did eventually graduate and joined the company full-time, we werent paying ourselves and routinely worked 100-hour weeks. Needless to say, I burnt out. I stopped sleeping, I wasnt eating, andmy overall health and well-being deteriorated. Eventually, my co-founders asked me to leave the company because it was clear I was confused about what I really wanted. I realized Id gone along with them this entire time not because I wanted to start this company with thembut out of obligation. I felt like I owed it to my friends. It was something I was supposed to do - what a cool opportunity, right? In hindsight, its clear thats not what I really wanted to do - and Im so grateful for that experience. It taught me an important lesson you must seek the tr uth for what you really want yourself. Trustyour own opinionsOnce youre brave enough to ask yourself what you want, you have to trust yourself in finding the answer.Early in my senior year of college, I had yet to tell my parents that I was going to start a company. Honestly, I was terrified. College is expensive, and the idea of telling my parents that I was going to start a companyand take no salary was nerve-wracking. I remember consciously choosing tonotask for other peoples advice. If I had asked my parents what I should do after college, I know they would have told me to go to graduate school, which is what they did. If I would have asked my mentor what I should do, he would have told me to go get a job at a corporation, which is what he did.Everyone is biased by their own opinion. The only way you cant go wrong is by listening to yourself. If I hadnt trusted myself, I would not have become an entrepreneur today.Work with what you haveBefore I started my current company, I had $10,000 in savings but no idea what my geschftlicher umgang was going to be. To make progress, every day, I asked myself Whats the most I can do with what I have right now? At the time, the answerwas to do as much research as possible to become an expert in the field. So I spent a few months and did that. Then, it was to do a case study on a company using the knowledge and expertise Id developed. So I went and did that. I continued to ask that question, and slowly, month by month, Ibuilt a consulting business and a software product, which was ultimately what I wanted to do. When youre striving for something greater, that gap between where you are and where you want to be can be daunting. Its easy to give up.Focusing on what you can do with what you already have makes things so much more attainable.Soon youll have closed the gap and be where you want to be.At the end of the day, I dont want to be considered lucky that I love my job. I believe everyone can and deserves to be happy at work - and hopefully, my three realizations are helpful as you find your own way to happiness at work.Claire Lew is theCEO of Know Your Company.

What to Eat on the Day of a Big Job Interview

What to Eat on the Day of a Big Job Interview What to Eat on the Day of a Big Job Interview Growing up my mother used to tell me growing up, “you are what you eat.”  While I eventually outgrew my childish giggles imagining sunny side egg top hats and broccoli-laden feet, as an adult I also realized that this sage advice is a bit more complicated than it initially seems.   I mean, sure, we all know that starting the day off with a solid breakfast provides much-needed fuel for the day to come.  If you’ve ever tried to survive that early morning meeting on one “double mocha latte” you know first hand the consequences of not feeding your body and your brain. This goes double for stressful or energy intensive events, such as nailing that big interview you’ve been anticipating for weeks on end.  And while my anecdotal evidence, learned over a plate of mom’s best scrambled eggs and bacon, is certainly solid supporting evidence, science has come a long ways recently in kicking this sage advice into overdrive.   Steven Pratt, MD, author of Superfoods Rx: Fourteen Foods Proven to Change Your Life, is just the recent in a plethora of scientists, doctors, and nutritionists who are advocating hacking our brains by filling up on key ingredients in the mornings or days leading up to that tasking interview or other life events.  So what are these nutritional marvels that may give you a mental leg up for your next big job interview?  We’ve broken down a few of our favorites below! Nuts, Seeds and Whole GrainsOh My Nuts and seeds have long been touted as excellent sources of essential vitamins and nutrients including the brainpower boosting Vitamin E.  In studies, Vitamin E has been shown to boost mental clarity and stave off the effects of age on your brain, long term.  Whole grains such as Flax are also excellent sources of mentally stimulating compounds such as alpha linolenic acid, a fatty acid that helps neurons process sensory input.  Consider that off the cuff interview question nailed! Start Your Day Off on a Berry Good Foot Perhaps one of the tastiest and worst kept secrets in the great superfood mythos, berries of various varieties are jam packed with everything your brain needs to keep performing at tip top shape.  Goji berries are chock full of beta carotene (move over carrots) and outdo oranges when it comes to vitamin C.  Blueberries and blackberries contain powerful antioxidants which are crucial for preventing brain damage from free radicals.  Move over brain fatigue! Play Your Carbs Right While everyone loves a good stack of pancakes during weekend brunch, right before your big interview may not be the most opportune time to carb up.  Items that contain white flour, simple sugars, and other easily processed carbohydrates can cause fluctuations in blood sugar with large energy spikes followed by equally low crashes.  If you’re inclined to eat starches, consider low glycemic impact fruits, vegetables and grains such as quinoa or whole wheat.  You can indulge in that celebratory slice of chocolate cake after you land the gig.   Be a Lean, Mean, Protein Machine Rather than carb-loading for your power breakfast, consider packing on the protein before your big interview.  Lean sources of protein are slower to digest, providing an even and consistent fuel source to power you through the day.  Many proteins also have beneficial fatty acids that help brain function.  Here’s to fueling the body and mind! Omega 3’s, Health Food Powerhouses Unless you’ve been hiding under a nutritional rock for the last few years, you’ve probably heard about the benefits of healthy Omega 3 fatty acids.  These tasty building blocks provide anti-inflammatory properties as well as aid in short term memory health, handy for being able to recall names, places, and dates during mission-critical interviews.  Salmon and other deepwater fish, eggs and certain veggies are big winners in the Omega-3 category so load up on that lox, stat! Overall Tips for Interview Day Meals Preparing your own sit-down meal on the day of your big interview provides more than just nutritional benefits as well.  Regular meals are vital aspects of creating important routines that help your brain sort, process, and access information more efficiently.  Meal time with family and friends can also be important times to download and exchange ideas or career advice.  You never know when mom might just have a piece of sage wisdom that helps you land that major gig.   Portion sizes, regardless of contents, are also important to help you feel your best.  Regardless of what you eat, a large meal that leaves you overfull will cause energy dips as your body diverts energy to help digest the nutritional feast.   Finally, don’t be afraid to bring a small snack in the form of a piece of fruit or granola bar, especially if you know your interview will take place over several hours.  Noshing down a few hundred calories over a quick break in between interviewers can help keep you alert and undistracted by a rumbling stomach.   Remember that your interview is your best chance to make a good first impression and when you feel your best you also perform your best.  Fuel your body and your mind to set yourself up for interview success!

USAJOBS 3.0 is Coming October 13, 2011

USAJOBS 3.0 is Coming October 13, 2011 USAJOBS 3.0 is Coming October 13, 2011 USAJOBS 3.0 is Coming October 13, 2011 USAJOBS will be shut down Oct. 6-13th for Upgrade! If you find the USAJOBS federal job application system frustrating and difficult, there’s some good news coming your way. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is about to give the government jobs website a complete makeover. The newly redone website is set to make its debut on October 13th. Agencies will be closing all announcements by October 6th, so the old system can be taken off line and the new one set up, and all data moved over. OPM is promising a few new changes that job applicants should like. First, according to OPM associate director of employee services Angela Bailey, OPM will be able to search resumes for specific applicant information. This is a process that currently takes months. The result will be quicker, more efficient, better-targeted recruiting efforts. Agency recruiters will be able to find and use data and information much more quickly. In addition, the goal is to make the system more user-friendly. Job seekers will only have to enter personal information once. Users will also be able to expect improved search results with details about salaries, grade levels and job categories. OPM is working on more changes to streamline the federal hiring process, including a skills testing tool, to replace the Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs) statements that applicants are currently trying to squeeze into their resumes. Stay tuned. It looks like more change is on the way.

The Top 7 Mistakes New Freelancers Make

The Top 7 Mistakes New Freelancers Make The Top 7 Mistakes New Freelancers Make For every happy freelancer, there are probably a dozen people who dip their toes into the waters of the world of working for themselves only to wind up beating a hasty retreat back to their cubicles. For some, thats perfectly fine: Not everyone is cut out to be a freelancer, and theres nothing wrong with trying it out and then deciding to do something else. There are a lot of reasons to freelance temporarily and then return to full-time work: waiting out a recession, starting a family, or branching out into a new area of your industry. The tragedy is when folks who could have built successful freelance careers make mistakes that force them back to the 9-to-5. The good news is that with a little advanced planning, you can head off most of these new freelancer mistakes and set yourself up for success, whether you remain a freelancer until retirement or go back to Corporate America on your own terms. 1. Starting Off Without Adequate Savings Most finance experts will tell you that you need three to six months worth of living expenses in savings as an emergency fund, even if you arent planning on starting your own freelancing business. If you are going out on your own, youll need to add startup costs to that figure. Fortunately, if youre freelancing and dont plan on having any employees for the moment, you wont need to worry about paying wages or (most likely) renting office space. But you will need to think about things like making sure your own computer equipment is up to snuff and that you have a dedicated place to work. Your four-year-old PC and comfy kitchen table might be perfect for occasional freelance jobs but might be frustrating once youre getting steady assignments. Try to anticipate the expenses that are likely to crop up during the first few months and plan for them. 2. Failing to Define Goals (and Then Revise Them) What do you need to get out of your freelance career? Its a more complicated question than it appears to be on its face, and only you can answer it. In order to feel successful, do you need to make more money than you did as an employee? Or will paying your bills and putting a little aside for a rainy day be enough? Do you value independence, a flexible schedule, and the ability to decide which clients youll take? Once you decide what your goals are, set a timeline. Check in at set intervals to make sure youre achieving them, and know that its OK to revise your goals as you learn more about your needs and the market. Write a business plan to formalize your goals. Even if you intend to remain a one-person shop, a business plan can help you make sure you’re heading in the right direction. It might also serve as a reminder to take yourself and your business seriously. 3. Diving In Too Soon Its a good idea to get your freelance career off the ground while working a full-time job for a few reasons. First of all, it enables you to try out different kinds of jobs and clients to determine which ones you like best. Secondly, it allows you to make mistakes- and fix them- without having to explain to the nice man at the electric company that you wont be paying your bill this month. Finally, it helps with creating that nest egg youll need to have on hand. The best way to build savings while youre contemplating a freelance career is by setting aside your earnings from any extra work you take on while you still have a full-time job. Don’t forget to put aside money for taxes and make your quarterly estimated payments. 4. Skipping the Contract Handshake deals can and do work, but its always better to have a written agreement with clients- but probably not for the reasons youd think. Having a contract wont necessarily help you recoup money if they fail to pay, because its pretty hard for an individual to compel a corporation to pay up. Legal fees often cost more than the amount youd hope to recoup. In reality, contracts exist to define expectations on both sides, keep honest people honest, and make sure that there are no surprises down the road. 5. Not Having a System Successful freelancers keep track of their records, including expenses, payments due, and payments received. As an independent worker, you dont necessarily need to shell out for small business accounting software; you just need to have a system. As long as youre keeping (and keeping track of) receipts, organizing invoices and bills, and paying your own bills on time, youre in good shape. For some freelancers, an Excel sheet and an envelope for receipts will be enough. For others, one of these free personal finance software packages will do the trick. 6. Taking On the Wrong Clients Theres a lot of room for variation, but in general, a good client is one who offers work you want to do and are equipped to do and who works with you to achieve a positive result. It should be relatively easy to communicate with your client, and they should pay you on time and in full according to your contract. Inevitably, youll wind up with a client who doesnt meet these criteria. The trick is to know when enough is enough- and to learn from the experience so that you recognize the signs of a bad client in the future. 7. Not Charging Enough (or Charging Too Much) Setting rates for your services can be complicated. Shoot too high, and you might lose the gig; shoot too low, and youll wind up so overextended, financially and emotionally, that you wont be able to do your best work. If youre freelancing in the same industry as your former full-time job, setting your rate gets a little bit easier. The goal is to make sure that your hourly rate works out to be about the same as you were earning when you worked for someone else. The tricky part of this calculation is figuring out all the hidden benefits included in your compensation, including health insurance, retirement contributions, and office supplies. Once you determine, roughly, how much you were really getting paid at your former full-time job, you can divide accordingly and bill either hourly or by the project, based on your estimate of how long each project will take. Finally, once youre working as a freelancer for some time, dont be afraid to take another look at your rates, revise them, and negotiate accordingly- especially when you take new freelance jobs. If you continued to work for someone else, youd hope to get a raise at some point. Dont neglect to give yourself the same consideration once youre your own boss.

3 Ways You Can Deal With Change at Work - The Muse

3 Ways You Can Deal With Change at Work - The Muse 3 Ways You Can Deal With Change at Work It’s natural to desire a clear direction and sense of control in our careers. After all, the unknown can be intimidating, especially when it comes to your professional future. But while it’s certainly comforting to have specific instructions provided at work, a fixation on structure and a constant need for direction can limit your potential. Fear of the unknown can prevent you from taking risks that could elevate your success, such as pitching an innovative idea for a new project or starting your own business. Staying in your comfort zone doesn’t allow for professional growth and keeps you playing small in both your career and life. Because the career-success trajectory rarely resembles a linear path, honing your ability to thrive within ambiguous circumstances is vital. Learning to not only navigate, but to also capitalize on the less clear-cut instructions and job responsibilities helps you become resilient. By building a tolerance for ambiguity, you can perfect the art of taking calculated risks that will assist you in adapting to ever-changing work environments, give you confidence in your decision-making ability, and render you more impervious to criticism. Here are three things that’ll lead to greater tolerance when it comes to those ambiguous work issues. 1. Make Small Bets One way to manage the daunting scale of the unknown is to break down risks into a series of experiments or small bets. Basically, you want to test the water before you jump in. If you are considering starting your own company, for example, a small bet might be keeping your day job while pursing a side gig on nights and weekends. Do this, and you’re effectively managing your risk by measuring the success and sustainability of your new venture while maintaining a regular source of income with your full-time position. Another way to understand this concept is through iteration, which is just a fancy way of saying you’re adapting, building, or expanding upon an idea. The goal is to test theories quickly and rigorously, evaluate the outcomes, and then evolve, pivot, or scrap it. Not every idea is inspired and deserves comprehensive pursuit. If you are in charge of product design for your company, for example, iteration helps you sort through the good ideas, weed out the bad ones, and foster the spectacular ones. The same is true for marketing techniques; sometimes, the campaign you develop is a complete flop, but the important thing is that you learn from the experience and incorporate your newly acquired knowledge into future projects. By trying out ideas on a smaller scale, you provide yourself the chance to evaluate how risky an idea is while simultaneously minimizing any potential negative impact in the event that it doesn’t work. 2. Avoid Overreliance on Plans Ambiguous circumstances can be particularly scary for people who crave structure. And, it’s true that organization can lead to efficiency, but it’s also possible to over-optimize and become too dependent on the plans you’ve made and the system you abide by. When you make long-term career plans, you should be flexible enough to review, adapt, and change them as necessary. If you’re too rigid, you’re probably going to have a problem dealing with the random stuff you have no control over. For those with a Type A personality, crafting a five-year career plan seems methodical and logical, but it can provide a false sense of comfort and harm more than help. Things change, and the goals you’ve set yourself may not be achieved on the timeline you had hoped, or in the way you imagined. For example, maybe you accept a job with the promise of leading a new division that’s set to launch in six months. But after one year there’s still no progress. If you’re too rigidly fixated on your five-year plan, you may continue to wait (and wait) for a promotion that ultimately never materializes, sacrificing years of your career and earning potential in the process. Instead, an uncertainty surfer would be willing to roll with the punches and adapt, perhaps agreeing to move to a different department in the company that offers more upward advancement or make the leap to a new company that will allow you to achieve your professional goals. If you rely on one firm plan, and have your sights set firmly on that, you’ll undoubtedly miss opportunities that arise along the way just because they don’t fit your career scheme. You may be working in a client-relations department when an associate at another company recognizes your talents for event planning and offers you a related role. Although it may not align with what you envisioned for your next job, if the position offers an opportunity for growth along with a great salary and a positive work environment, it’d be shortsighted not to at least consider it. 3. Embrace the Inevitable One of the scariest things about accepting workplace ambiguity is the inability to plan for the unexpected. And yet in life, things rarely go exactly as we think they will. It’s impossible to anticipate when someone’s going to call in sick or when your supervisor’s going to spring a surprise on you. You can really only plan for the fact that unpredictable things are going to happen. When the unpredictable things aren’t good, they, nonetheless, don’t need to be crippling. By practicing negative visualization, an ancient psychological process intended to help you avoid emotional instability during stressful situations, you can learn to effectively manage your emotions when things do go south. Imagining negative possible outcomes (think worse-case scenarios) before they happen will enable you anticipate and navigate setbacks. If you fear getting fired, consider how you might react if this were to happen. What would you say? What would you do next? You’d likely formulate a plan that involves polishing your resume and using your network to secure interviews- a far cry from ending up broke and homeless, a dramatic worst-case scenario. The process works because it’ll empower you to assess circumstances rationally rather than reactively, thereby avoiding career-damaging hasty decisions. You’ll often find that the “worst” you prepared for doesn’t come close to representing the reality of the situation. Whether your supervisor has started asking you to completely manage your quarterly projects or you’re keen on laying the groundwork for a brand new initiative, building a tolerance for ambiguity is a necessary job skill. The ability to work through assignments without supervision or explicit direction is an indispensable professional strength, and you can’t survive a changing workplace without it. These are the cities hit hardest by the winter blues

These are the cities hit hardest by the winter blues These are the cities hit hardest by the winter blues With last week’s “bomb cyclone” and a weekend of ghastly, ice-cold temperatures, it’s easy to feel like all you want to do is crawl back under the covers instead of heading to work in the morning.Apparently, that’s how a lot of cities feel. Top among them: Pittsburgh. The city was ranked as the top city where the winter season brings workers down emotionally,  according to new research from Accountemps, which surveyed more than 2,700 office workers in the U.S. who were age 18 and up.So how does your city stack up?Cities where winter harms workers’ moods1. Pittsburgh2. Detroit3. Cleveland4.  Chicago5.  Boston6. Indianapolis7.  MinneapolisCities where winter helps workers’ moods1. Phoenix2. Miami / San Diego (tied)4. Austin5. Dallas, Los Angeles, Houston (tied)Tips for surviving a harsh winter when taking time off isn’t an optionHere’s what employers and employees can do…Work from home when you canStaying at home instead of braving crazy cold temperatures might just warm up your mood. Just make sure you’re prepared to work as efficiently as possible - have your work passwords on hand, and bring home your work laptop and/or any files you need. You’ll still have tasks to finish when toiling away at home, but taking the commute off the table for a day is a nice way to slow down during a hectic week.Ensure that employees actually want to come to workMichael Steinitz, executive director of Accountemps, commented on the research in a statement, showing how companies can help.“Winter doldrums are a reality at work in some cities, often due to colder weather, fewer hours of daylight and holiday festivities ending,” he said. “Employers can do their part to lift morale by fostering a collaborative, engaging and supportive office culture year-round.”Embrace ‘hygge’ by making your workspace cozyNo, you probably won’t be able to burn candles - commonly associated with the Danish winter philosophy of  hygge - at your corporate desk. But th at doesn’t mean you can’t be bundled up. If your office insists on keeping the temperature down, bundle up with scarfs and extra sweaters. Also keep an extra hat and a set of gloves in a desk drawer.Make sure you always have access to a hot drink to perk you up, and bring your own tea bags from home if your office pantry isn’t stocked up with the flavors you’re craving.

This principle will change how you see yourself

This principle will change how you see yourself This principle will change how you see yourself “The Universe is under no obligation to make sense to you.” -  Neil deGrasse  Tyson You are not special.Don’t feel sad about it though; it’s not just you.The Earth, the stars, the sun and, of course, other people are not special either.Your country is not more exceptional than someone else’s; the Universe doesn’t revolve around you; our planet is not more privileged than the rest. The Mediocrity Principle is a philosophical notion that establishes that most of what happens in the world is just a consequence of natural, universal laws - rules that apply everywhere and to everything, and everyone. There are no exemptions - we all are affected by this universal law.Rather than feeling sad about it; accepting the Mediocrity Principle can liberate you from the social burden of trying to look special. The unique opportunity to being yourselfThe Mediocrity Principle is difficult to grasp for many people. It’s hard to realize you are not special. Also, religious beliefs or other scientific theories, cloud our understanding.I’m not trying to sell you on this theor y - I’m inviting you to revisit everything you know, starting with you.Ladders is now on SmartNews!Download the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.See what happens when you see everything through the lens of the Mediocrity Principle. You might feel uneasy at first but, eventually, it’s a liberating experience. What happens when you realize that no one is special?Everything we consider cosmically important is an accident. Your looks are the result of random genetic combinations during meiosis. The color of your eyes, gender, bone structure, height, etc. weren’t purposefully designed by your parents - you are the byproduct of chance. As P. Z. Myers wrote about it: “What the Mediocrity Principle tells us is that our state is not the product of intent, that the universe lacks malice and benevolence, but that everything follows rules.”Understanding how we came to be here and how everything works is an effective wa y to remove fantasies and speculations. As the author says, understanding this concept could help us get rid of many cognitive biases. The Mediocrity Principle liberates you from social pressure too. Realizing that you are not special, doesn’t mean embracing mediocrity by any means. You are free to be yourself. The need to feel special forces you to compare to others. Being special is claiming that you are superior and better than others. It’s feeling entitled to deserve greater things than other people. Or believing that nothing bad should ever happen to you.You are different to everyone else - not superior. You are unique. No one like you has existed before (not it will never be). Nature doesn’t repeat itself. Your physical appearance, your emotions and beliefs, your personality, and all your choices make you unique, but not special.Feeling superior turns you into a character. Get rid of your mask. When you stop trying to be special, the more authentic you become.Goodbye reput ation, welcome you “Live where you fear to live. Destroy your reputation. Be notorious.” -  Rumi Stop thinking that the world revolves around you.I’m not judging you. We all fall into that trap.I want to invite you to free yourself from the fantasy of clinging to a reputation. Who cares what others are thinking? The truth is no one is watching you - or really paying attention to you, for that matter.Everyone is busy living their own lives.A reputation is something external - it’s not defined by you, but by others.Your acts can contribute to your reputation but, today’s society is a reminder that reputations are easy to be manipulated. Regardless of how good you are at what you do; someone will always try to get you.Maybe because you are in a position they envy. Some people need to make you smaller, so they look taller in the eyes of others.Other people are blinded by their beliefs. When they don’t agree with yours, they will say you know nothing or that you are wrong. Don’t take it personally. Their attack is not about you; they are just insecure - when people have doubts they go after those who think differently to them. Why let other people’s judgment or indifference define how you live your life?Stanley Kubrick said: “The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile, but that it is indifferent. If we can come to terms with this indifference, then our existence as a species can have genuine meaning. However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.”Your reputation is not you. What others think of you can get you stuck. Trying to please others’ expectations will prevent you from living how you want. That the world doesn’t revolve around you is great news. You are freer than you think. The dangerous side of a reputationDon’t get me wrong, being respected and appreciated by others is a good thing. However, being trapped by your reputation is not. Many actors would have done everything to play Luke Skywalker in the first Star Wars movie. However, when Milos Forman was casting for the “Amadeus” leading role, he rejected Mike Hammil immediately. The Czech American wasn’t concerned about the actor’s skills; he simply didn’t want “Luke Skywalker” in his film. When you can’t separate your reputation from your identity, you lose a sense of who you really are.Public figures, like celebrities or politicians, are particularly vulnerable to live in a “narcissistic bubble.” They lose the sense of accountability for their behavior. Narcissistic personalities tend to have an exaggerated sense of self-importance. They believe they are special - they have a sense of entitlement.Psychologists define entitlement as “an unrealistic, unmerited or inappropriate expectation of favorable living conditions and favorable treatment at the hands of others.”Simply put, entitled people believe the world revolves around them. And that everyone needs to pay tribute to them. They expect life, not only not to be unfair, but to reward them with special benefits.Narcissists view themselves as bette r than everyone else - they are convinced they deserve higher praise.Your reputation doesn’t define you. That’s why the Mediocrity Principle is so powerful: it frees you from needing a sense of entitlement. It’s not that you shouldn’t aspire to more or to try to get better. It’s just that, no matter how much you achieve or how successful you are, you are not special. You were born by chance. Even if your parents were looking to get pregnant and have a child. You were created as a result of a chance shuffle of genetic elements - that’s why YOU were born and not someone else. You don’t need a reputation to prove anything to anyone.Let go of the burden “The human race is just a chemical scum on a moderate-sized planet, orbiting around a very average star in the outer suburb of one among a hundred billion galaxies.” -  Stephen Hawking Remember, the world doesn’t revolve around you. You may like to think so, but it doesn’t.Others are not always watching what you do (or not). Most people don’t care about you. They are concerned with their own reputation. Or are busy living their own lives. You are unique, you don’t need to feel special.Liberate yourself from thinking you are special, and you’ll be free to do special things. Let go of worrying - the Universe is not watching. You are on your own. No more excuses. The only person you can disappoint is yourself.. . .Razzetti is a Change Instigator helping people and teams lead change.
